Haridwar is a holy city in the state of Uttaranchal in northern India. Known as the Gateway to the Gods, Haridwar is considered one of the seven holiest places according to Hindus, as the devas are said to have left their footprints there. Here pilgrims float diyas on the Ganges, to commemorate their deceased ancestors. The city also stands as a gateway to three other important pilgrimage destinations: Rishikesh, Badrinath, and Kedarnath. In Haridwar you will see a great statue of Shiva at the fork of the river. If you are there for a short visit, it is definitely worth to visit the temple on top of the mountain, with a wonderful view.

Haridwar has privilege of having IIT at Roorkee, formerly known as University of Roorkee, founded in 1847 as a first technical institute of India. The city has one of the "navratna PSUs of India" i.e BHEL (Bharat Heavy Electricals India Ltd.). The tomb Piran Kaliar of Shabir Shahib in Roorkee is a living example of religious harmony in India which is visited by the people of all religious sects from all over the world. There is another University in the city called Gurukul Kangri Vishva Vidyalaya apart from the head quarter of Uttaranchal State Public Service Commission also being established at Haridwar. Besides this, Kumbh fair is organized at the interval of every 12 years in this city in which about 1 crore pilgrims from all over the world participate.

Haridwar Temples
 

Mansa Devi Temple
Mansa Devi temple is the most visited temple in Haridwar. The temple is dedicated to Mansa Devi, an incarnation of Goddess of power, Durga. The temple is perched on a hilltop, called Bilwa hill. The only way to reach the temple is to choose from the options of trekking or ropeway cable car. Both of the ways sound really exciting, as spirituality and adventure come together at Mansa Devi Temple.

Pawan Dham Temple
The Pawan Dham temple in Haridwar, Uttaranchal, India is one of the important religious sites that must be visited during pilgrimage tours. This ancient temple is located at a distance of 2 kilometers from the town and is known for the glasswork that has been done on the temple walls. The Pawan Dham Temple is quite popular for the elaborately ornamented idols.


Maya Devi Temple
At the famous Maya Devi temple, the goddess is worshipped as an embodiment of power or Shakti. The temple is one of the shaktipeeths of India. According to ancient scriptures, when lord Shiva was carrying his burnt wife Sati, the heart and navel of Sati fell at this place.

Vaishno Devi Temple
The temple dedicated to Vaishno Devi is the newest of Haridwar temples. The temple is a true replica of the original Vaishno Devi temple in Jammu. Devotees visit the temple in large numbers.


Another religious site, the Gauri Shankar Temple is an important religious site of Haridwar. Besides the above-mentioned temples there are quite a few other religious sites in Haridwar, like Jai Ram Ashram, Anandamayee Ma Ashram, Sapt Rishi Ashram and the Daksha Mahadev temple.

 
Kumbh Mela
 
The holy festival of Kumbh is the most sacred celebration for Hindus. The festival falls every 3 years and is celebrated in 4 different cities, viz., Allahabad, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nasik. According to popular belief, Kumbh mela has the powers to the wash away all the sins of a person and free him from the cycle of birth-rebirth, of those who participate in them with full devotion. The festival is held at the banks of Ganga in Haridwar, as Haridwar is the place where Ganga enters plains, from hilly region.
 
 
Har ki Pauri
 
The Har ki Pauri ghat is a sacred place for Hindus. The ghat is equivalent to the Dashashwamedh Ghat in Varanasi, in religious terms. Har ki Paudi means Steps (Paudi) of Shiva (Har). It is believed that Shiva and Vishnu have visited the ghat in the vedic era. The ghat is said to have a large footprint, supposed to be that of Vishnu. Legends have it that Brahma had performed a Yagna (Prayers) at the banks of Ganga, on Har ki Paudi. Later Shiva visited the place and found it suitable to release Ganga on the plains. The sacred ghat was constructed by King Vikramaditya in the memory of his brother Bhartrihari.
 
 
How to Reach
 

By Air - The nearest airport is the Jolly Grant in Dehradun, but it is preferable to use the roads or rail to Delhi and then take flights to the destination of ones choice.

By Rail - Haridwar is well connected by trains to almost all the major cities in India. In fact, trains are the major source of the tourist inflow to Haridwar.

By Road - The National Highway no.45 crosses the city, so it is connected to other cities of the state as well as those in the other states too. We would provide you all India tourist permit vehicles for the local transportations and also for the intercity drives too.
